What is the Difference Between Square Wave and Pure Sine Wave Inverters?

Understanding the Difference Between Square Wave and Pure Sine Wave UPS Systems

When selecting a UPS and studying the difference on a data sheet, you may see some electrical jargon like “pure sine wave” vs. “modified sine wave.” If you’re unsure what that means, we’re here to explain it.

What is a UPS System?

A UPS system is essential for converting Direct Current (DC) electricity stored in batteries into Alternating Current (AC) electricity used by most household and industrial appliances. More importantly, a UPS provides backup power to ensure your critical equipment continues to operate during power outages, protecting against data loss, hardware damage, and operational downtime.

Square Wave vs. Pure Sine Wave UPS Systems

To give you an idea of how the two currents look like, refer to the photo below:

Square Wave UPS Systems:

  • Supported Appliances: Square Wave UPS systems are typically limited to basic applications and are not suitable for devices with motors or sensitive electronics.
We do not offer any square wave UPS at PSS Distributors.
  • Overall Safety Level: These systems are less reliable and can be unsafe for most household appliances. They are banned in some regions due to their potential to cause overheating and damage.
  • Noise Interference: Square Wave UPS systems often produce a loud noise during operation, which can be disruptive.
  • Cost: While they are less expensive, the limitations and potential risks make them a less desirable option.

Pure Sine Wave UPS Systems:

  • Supported Appliances: Pure Sine Wave UPS systems are versatile and can support a wide range of household and industrial appliances, including refrigerators, ovens, computers, and other sensitive electronics.
  • Overall Safety Level: These systems provide a high level of reliability and safety, closely mimicking the AC power supplied by the grid.
  • Noise Interference: Pure Sine Wave UPS systems operate quietly, making them suitable for residential and office environments.
  • Cost: Although they are more expensive than Square Wave systems, their benefits in terms of compatibility, safety, and efficiency justify the investment.

Modified Sine Wave UPS Systems:

  • Eco Range: Our Eco range (Eco 600VA – 2200VA) includes Modified Sine Wave UPS systems that are suitable for applications such as CCTV, telecommunications, small roller shutters, NBN, and some computers.
  • Supported Appliances: While better than Square Wave systems, Modified Sine Wave UPS systems still cannot support some sensitive equipment such as medical devices, certain laptops, home automation systems, and appliances with microprocessor controls.
  • Recommendation: Given the decreasing cost difference between Modified Sine Wave and Pure Sine Wave UPS systems, upgrading to Pure Sine Wave technology can often provide better long-term value and compatibility.

Pure Sine Wave UPS Systems:

  • Supported Appliances: All our other UPS systems are Pure Sine Wave, ensuring comprehensive support for a wide range of devices and appliances.
  • Advantages: Pure Sine Wave systems provide superior performance, making them ideal for environments where reliability and safety are paramount.
